In a Valley beer scene that never seems to slow down, it’s always fun when a newer brewery starts stacking awards faster than anyone expected. That’s exactly what’s happening over at Pinnacle Brewing Company, where a family-run operation is quietly building a reputation as one of the most technically sharp lager houses in Arizona.

The brewery’s roots go back nearly a decade, when head brewer Wyatt Wilson began mapping out the plan while finishing brewing school and working his way up through the industry. What eventually opened in Scottsdale didn’t just become another taproom; it became a full family operation. Wyatt handles the brewing, while the broader family helps drive both the food program and the customer experience, creating what Wyatt’s father and co-owner Bob Wilson describes as a true family business built on direct communication and high standards. That focus on quality shows up immediately in the beer.

While plenty of breweries chase trends, Pinnacle has really leaned into lager brewing. It’s not the easiest path, but one that rewards precision. Wyatt says technical perfection to style is always the goal: getting as close as possible to the classic European originals that inspired him. That mindset has already paid off in a big way. Pinnacle’s Ludwig Märzen pulled a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival, one of the most competitive stages in the country, and Wyatt admits hearing the announcement was a bit of a surreal moment. Even more telling, his Czech-style lagers have already stacked multiple gold medals, confirming what regulars already knew: this place takes lager seriously.

If you’re visiting for the first time, there are a couple of beers you shouldn’t skip. Wyatt points to Viktoria 12º, his ambitious attempt at recreating a traditional Czech pilsner, along with Surveillance Pigeon, a cold IPA he calls the one IPA he’ll “hang his hat on.” Both show the range here, from meticulous Old World lager work to modern styles done with restraint.

A newer addition to the brewery is the Beerded BBQ truck parked onsite, which came after interviewing several chefs before landing on a partner who not only brought strong food but also brewery-world experience. For a solid pairing, Wyatt points straight to the wings with the Trida 11º Amber Czech Lager. The biscuity malt character lines up perfectly with the dry rub. Bob adds that fuller, malt-forward beers like Mild Mild West are great with barbecue, while lighter, crisp lagers like Tori Japanese Rice Lager are perfect for balancing out the heat.

Looking ahead, Pinnacle isn’t slowing down. A slate of local brewery collaborations is already underway, all building toward their second-anniversary celebration on May 2, where they plan to bring back the award-winning Springtoberfest Maibock.

If you’re hoping to find their beers widely available, well, tough luck. Despite having a long list of beers to try at the taproom, their brews haven’t made their way into many stores or restaurants. That’s not due to a shortage of demand, but in fact the opposite. Sustaining wide distribution requires a scale beyond what Wyatt is focused on at the moment. For now, this highly talented young brewer will be keeping almost all of his beer in-house to refresh the taproom’s customers. Since lager beers take longer to brew, it’s exciting to see a brewery focus on a style that may not lend itself to scale, but surely lends to a special beverage.

For Scottsdale beer fans or anyone who appreciates a brewery more focused on getting the beer right than chasing hype, Pinnacle feels like one of those spots you’ll be hearing about more and more. Grab a lager, order the wings, and settle in. They’re just getting started.
