Mead is the world’s most ancient fermented beverage. 9000 years ago some humans stumbled upon fermented honey water, and the world was never the same. Now, in the 21st century, mead has seen a resurrection in American culture. Luckily, Drinking Horn Meadery has made it their mission to bring mead to the masses. With their high-quality, locally focused, and affordable mead, Drinking Horn is an outlier in the Arizona craft beverage scene. Drinking Horn also recently opened a beautiful taproom in the heart of Flagstaff, right off of the Historic Route 66 Highway.

Humble Beginnings

It was in 2014 that Evan Anderson created Drinking Horn Meadery. But the journey began years before, as many beverage companies do, through homebrewing. Evan was a major mead homebrewer, even making a huge batch for his wedding. In fact, it was after the major success of Evan’s mead at his wedding, that he figured it was time to go pro. It would take a few years to get things off the ground, but eventually Drinking Horn Meadery was born. From the beginning, Evan’s goal with Drinking Horn Meadery was to make mead available to the average consumer. When he first opened up his meadery, most of his competition was overly sweet and expensive. So early on Evan focused on using the highest quality ingredients, including local honey, to concoct a more dry style of mead. Now the Drinking Horn lineup ranges from traditional mead to coffee mead, watermelon, and even lime varieties. Evan and his crew also carbonate many of their fruited meads, bringing in a refreshing twist to their amazing drinks.

Sulfite Free Mead

Drinking Horn Meadery is absolutely succeeding in their goal of bringing mead to the masses. Most importantly, they are doing it the right way. Not only does Drinking Horn source many local ingredients, promoting sustainability, they refuse to use any sulfites or preservatives in their meads. Across the production mead, wine, and beer industry preservatives are an unfortunate nature of the business. Still, Evan developed his own proprietary method to ensure a preserved product without the use of strong preservatives. This makes Drinking Horn’s meads better for the consumer, and a more exciting beverage.

Mead Taproom in Flagstaff

Recently, Drinking Horn opened their mead hall in the heart of Downtown Flagstaff. Located right along the historic Route 66, Drinking Horn’s taproom lies in amongst all the beautiful brick buildings that characterize Downtown Flag. Old viking ships were the inspiration of Drinking Horn’s mead hall. Wooden beams join together among illuminated viking helmets. It truly is the perfect setting to enjoy a tasteful glass of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage.
